Belgrade

Position


Belgrade is situated in South East Europe, on the Balkan peninsula, at the confluence of two international rivers, Sava and Danube, surrounding it from three sides. Beeing in such specific position, it was rightfully called “The Gate of the Balkans” and “The Door to Central Europe”.

Geographic coordinates of Belgrade are:
- 44˚49'14'' North geographic lattitude,
- 20˚27'44'' East geographic longitude,

The surrounding area of Belgrade is diverse, having on one hand the Panone plane in the North and Šumadija (or the area of woods) in the South. The average sea level of Belgrade is 117 m. In the proximity of Belgrade there are two mountains, Kosmaj (628 m) and Avala (511 m).
The length of river beds of Belgrade is some 200 km and there are 16 river islands in that area of which Ada Ciganlija and the Great War Islands are the largest ones.

Territory

Inner city of Belgrade, urban part covers area of 36 km2, while the total surface area of the City of Belgrade is some 322 km2. The longest direction North-South is 92.98 km, a nd East-West is 67.50 km.
Belgrade is administratively divided in 17 municipalities:
- 10 urban (Čukarica, Novi Belgrade , Palilula, Rakovica, Savski venac, Stari grad, Voždovac, Vračar, Zemun and Zvezdara),
- 7 suburban (Barajevo, Grocka, Lazarevac, Obrenovac, Mladenovac, Sopot and Surčin).

Climate

The climate in Belgrade is moderately continental with all four seasons. The average temperature is 11.70C.
The autumn is longer than the spring with long sunny and warm intervals (the so-called Indian Summer). The winter is not very severe, and the average number of days with temperatures below zero is 21. Summer usually comes abruptly. January is the coldest month with average temperature of 0.10C , and July is the warmest with average temperature being 22.10C.
There is a wind, very specific for Belgrade – South-Eastern and Eastern, called “Košava”, bringing the serene and dry weather, mostly blowing in autumn and winter in intervals of 2 to 3 days, and speed of 25 to 43 km/h.
The average number of days with precipitations is 137 of which 27 are with snow. The biggest precipitations occur in May and in June and the least in the month of February. They are mostly one-day precipitations with average quantity being 669.5 l/m2.
Average atmospheric pressure in Belgrade is 1001 mb, while the relative average humidity rate is 69.5%.

Population

As per data collected in 2005, the population permanently residing in the wide territory of the City of Belgrade is 1.732.400.
As a result of very tumultuous history, Belgrade is home to numerous nations and nationalities. Majority of inhabitants of Belgrade are Serbs of Orthodox religion (90%).
The official language of Serbia is Serbian, from the group of south Slav languages. Cyrillic is the alphabet officially in use in Serbia. Latin alphabet is equally used and learned in schools. Serbian Cyrillic alphabet has 30 letters – one letter standing for each of the sounds used, which makes it so unique compared to all other alphabets.
Languages and alphabets of minorities are mostly used in the territories they live in. It is suggested that foreign citizens use English. Other languages as German, French and Russian, are not so represented.

Currency 

The official currency in Serbia is dinar (RSD).

Banknotes in:   10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 i 5000 dinars
The currency exchange is available in all banks as well as in numerous authorized exchange offices.
It is most convenient to be in possession of EUROS as all prices in Serbia are regularly counted in Euros as well.
